Susan George

Additional Director of Income Tax (Vigilance), Government of India

Susan George is an officer of the Indian Revenue Service, currently posted as Additional Commissioner of Income Tax in New Delhi. Between 2007 and 2012, she worked as Director in the Ministry of Panchayati Raj where she was involved in policy formulation and advocacy for administrative and fiscal empowerment of rural local governments in India. During this period, she handled various schemes of the Ministry relating to empowerment of elected women’s representatives, e-governance for Panchayats and incentivising states to devolve powers to the Panchayats.

From August 2011 to October 2012, she managed the Backward Regions Grant Fund, under which block grants are given to local bodies for community-driven development. She was also responsible for monitoring implementation of the PESA Act, which enables people-centric governance in tribal areas. Prior to her deputation to the Ministry of Panchayati Raj, Susan worked in various capacities in the Income Tax Department in Mumbai, Bangalore and New Delhi. She handled different aspects of tax administration including assessment, investigation, taxpayer information services and audit.

Her most recent degree is the Master of Public Affairs from the University of Texas at Austin where she was a Joint Japan World Bank Graduate Scholar from 2003-05. She also holds an M.A. in Modern History from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. Susan successfully completed a short-term training program in ‘Fiscal Decentralisation and Local Government Financial Management’ at Duke University in July 2012.
