The impact of 2023 for Australia India relations has simply been incredible and therefore busy for us all at the Institute! I have recently returned from an inaugural Indo-Pacific Conference at King’s College London on developing how Australia and India can better engage the UK on building resilience and security in the region, in line with its Indo-Pacific ‘tilt’. The potential for building a new trilateral relationship is an exciting way to end the year and demonstrates the opportunities to develop in 2024.
November in Melbourne saw the Australia India Leadership Dialogue, the premier forum for informal diplomacy between both nations, a high point for the Institute. The 1.5 track dialogue welcomed leaders to participate in robust conversations on key drivers in the relationship and helped pave the way for formal agreements to be made. A big thank you to Atlassian for their partnership.
At a similar moment, the Foreign Affairs and Defence ministers from both countries met for the second 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue, welcoming the positive and increased momentum of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. It was particularly energising to see ministers acknowledge the deepening cooperation between Australia and India that is fuelled by the Indian diaspora.
Climate change continues to challenge our existence, and my heart goes out to all those affected by the recent tragedy unleashed by Cyclone Michaung in Tamil Nadu. Heavy rains and strong winds have claimed lives, displaced thousands, and inundated residential areas.
In the face of adversity, stories of resilience emerge. Australian underground tunnelling expert Professor Arnold Dix’s heroic efforts in rescuing 41 workers trapped inside Uttarkashi’s Silkyara tunnel exemplify enduring bonds between Australia and India, transcending borders in the pursuit of shared humanity!
Reflecting on this year, I sincerely thank the Institute’s team for their hard work in 2023 and the many Indian, Australian and global think tanks, experts and fellows who have contributed significantly to our programs. Their input is crucial to help us tell the story of the significant and growing relationship between Australia and India.
Have a wonderful festive season!
