Australia-India trade deal passes Australian parliament
November 2022
From the CEO
It has been a momentous month for Australia-India relations as the Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA) came closer to ratification as it passed through the Australian parliament, a week after both Prime Ministers Modi and Albanese met on the sidelines of the G20, cementing their ongoing commitment to the bilateral relationship.
India celebrated taking over the role of the G20 Presidency that will officially begin in December. Their logo and slogan was unveiled as “One Earth. One Family. One Future.”
Australia’s Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs Tim Watts MP also made his first official visit to India, where he attended the Bengaluru Tech Summit and reiterated Australia’s plans to open a new Consulate in 2023 and establish the Centre for Critical and Emerging Tech Policy.
The Institute joined Deakin University’s Contemporary Histories to co-host a book launch on the history of the Australian High Commission in India edited by the Institute’s Fellow Professor David Lowe and Eric Meadows, and we look forward to hosting Ambika Vishwanath, Director of the Mumbai based thinktank Kubernein Initiative, on female leaders in foreign policy.
I also joined renowned chef Kishwar Chowdhury to speak about the impact of South Asian food and culture in Australia in a new Chats over Chai podcast.
Finally, I was delighted to welcome students from Pune and Hyderabad to the Institute as part of Melbourne University’s BSc Blended Research Camp for chats over for chai and samosas.
