I am excited to announce that the Institute will soon offer new fellowships for women researchers in STEM. These fellowships are part of our efforts to promote research collaboration between Australia and India and tackle gender inequality in the research community. With women making up just 30% of STEM researchers worldwide, these fellowships, opening applications on 26 August, aim to help change that.
I am delighted to announce the Premier of Victoria, the Hon. Jacinta Allan will give our 2024 Annual Oration in New Delhi next month, complimenting the strong relationship between the Institute and the Victorian Government. This will form part of my visit to India that will include the opening of the new University of Melbourne’s Global Centre – Delhi. I am also looking forward to engaging with prominent think tanks, academic institutions and government leaders on key research and policy issues for our two nations and the region.
I’d like to warmly welcome The Hon. Alex Chernov AC KC as a Distinguished Fellow to the Institute. Mr Chernov is an Australian lawyer, judge, and barrister, who instigated the founding of the Australia India Institute. We look forward to drawing from his eminent expertise and knowledge. The Institute is also looking forward to hosting former Ambassador Anil Wadhwa for a conversation on: ‘Australia, India and the World’ in partnership with the University of Melbourne’s Faculty of Arts on September 4. Register here for this in person event.
As India recently celebrated Independence Day, I wanted to share a fun fact. Did you know that Australia was the first to hoist India’s independent flag in the world, just seven hours after gaining independence in 1947? You can read about it here.
Finally, happy Raksha Bandhan to all the brothers and sisters who celebrated.
Best,
Lisa
