Defence Program

Defence Program

The Defence Program is focused on promoting discussion on new areas of Australia-India defence and security cooperation with the goal of strengthening strategic ties between the two countries and promoting regional stability

About the program

Australia and India continue to strengthen their defence and security partnership, with their strategic perspectives on the Indo-Pacific becoming increasingly aligned. As Quad members, both nations actively participate in joint military exercises and defence initiatives. However, greater efforts are needed, bilaterally and with partners, to enhance regional security and uphold the fragile Indo-Pacific rules-based order.

The Australia India Institute’s Defence Program drives discussions on emerging areas of defence and security cooperation, aiming to deepen strategic ties and promote regional stability. The program publishes research on new initiatives, including defence industry collaboration, and fosters greater engagement between the two nations.

With funding support from the Australian Government Department of Defence, the program enhances understanding of the growing Australia-India defence relationship and identifies opportunities for further cooperation. Through research, dialogue, government roadmaps, visits, and policy recommendations, it actively promotes collaboration and strengthens defence engagement.

As part of its ongoing efforts, the program is releasing a landmark defence roadmap for the future of Australia’s and India’s defence relationship, outlining a comprehensive vision and strategic direction for the next decade of cooperation.
