Sydney Defence Tech Dialogue 9th November 2023
Australia and India’s strategic perspectives have been converging for more than a decade, and now regard each other as top ranking strategic partners. Their defence forces work closely with each other through exercises and they are now granting access to each other’s facilities/territory for vessels, aircraft and in space tracking.
An important missing piece in the relationship is collaboration between their defence industries. Both Australia and India have large and sophisticated defence technology sectors that are world leaders in many areas. Both countries could significantly benefit from working together through joint development, technology sharing and supply.
India’s defence budget currently stands at some $112 billion and it is the largest importer of defence equipment in the world. In coming years, Australian defence spending is due to grow considerably, with a significant focus on the maritime and space domains.
This Strategic Dialogue will explore opportunities for defence sector collaboration between Australia and India, particularly in the maritime domain.
