James Bowen is an internationally recognised researcher and analyst working at the intersection of energy, climate and foreign policy. He is director of the consultancy ReMap Research and an adviser at Melbourne-based political risk firm Dragoman Global. James works with NGOs, think tanks, governments and businesses to improve understanding and formulate responses to Indo-Pacific energy and industrial transitions. He has investigated Australia-India cooperation in sectors including critical minerals, hydrogen, green metals, and renewable technologies.
James previously worked at foreign policy think tanks on three continents: the Perth USAsia Centre in Australia, Mercator Institute for China Studies in Germany, and International Peace Institute in the United States. James’ work has also been commissioned by institutions including the Korea Economic Institute of America, German Marshall Fund for the United States, Australian Strategic Policy Institute, Asia Society Policy Institute, Transparency International, and World Wildlife Fund.
James has appeared in countless in-person and virtual policy dialogues hosted by institutions in countries including Australia, India, the United States, Japan, and Korea. He has been an expert consultant for the International Renewable Energy Agency, appeared before parliamentary inquiries, and briefed numerous government departments and senior officials, including ambassadors and members of federal parliament. James has published op-eds and interviews in media including Nikkei Asia, Channel News Asia, the Australian Financial Review, Bloomberg, the Diplomat, ChinaFile, the National Interest, 9DashLine, World Politics Review, the Lowy Interpreter, New Europe, South China Morning Post, ABC TV and Radio, and SkyNews.
James started his career as a journalist and political speechwriter, focused on energy and resources.
