Prof Peter Stanley
Hon. Prof. Peter Stanley of UNSW Canberra is one of Australia’s leading military historians. He was Principal Historian at the Australian War Memorial, where he worked from 1980 to 2007, and Research Professor at UNSW Canberra 2013-2023. Over a forty-year career he has published 45 books, including Bad Characters: Sex, Crime, Mutiny, Murder and the Australian Imperial Force, joint winner of the Prime Minister’s Prize for Australian History, 2011. Peter’s 1993 ANU PhD was, published as White Mutiny (1998) on the aftermath of the 1857 mutiny-rebellion. He has published four further books on British India: Die in Battle, Do not Despair: the Indians on Gallipoli, 1915 (2015), Terriers in India: British Territorials 1914-19 (2019), Hul! Hul!: the Suppression of the Santal Rebellion, Bengal, 1855 (2022) and John Company’s Armies: The Military Forces of British India 1824-57 (2024). He also writes historical novels set in India.
