The season of multilateral and minilateral enagements has delivered fruit for the Australia India relationship over the past month with the 16th Australia India Foreign Ministers Framework Dialogue and the new Australia-Canada-India Technology and Innovation Partnership. I look forward to building on this momentum when I am in India next month as part of our education program.
To that end, I was pleased to be in Kuala Lumpur for the 2025 ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP) Forum hosted by the Institute of Strategic and International Studies, and in Canberra for the Australian Institute of International Affairs National Conference for discussions on how to strengthen our partnerships to respond to the contestation and uncertainty in the Indo-Pacific region.
Building on this mission, the Institute hosted four visiting Indian Ocean and South Asia security experts as part of our Defence Special Visitor Program. During a 10-day visit across Canberra, Sydney and Perth, our experts engaged with a broad spectrum of think tank, academic and policy professionals – stimulating greater dialogue on security challenges and fostering deeper bilateral connections with Australian counterparts.
Following on from the launch of the Institute’s ‘Advancing High-Performance Sports: Victoria-India Opportunities’, the Institute held the Victoria-India Sports Innovation Industry Roundtable. In partnership with Global Victoria and Sports Tech World Series (STWS) the roundtable shared insights on how Victoria and India can work together in the sports innovation space, fostering collaboration and strengthening ties.
While sports has always been a pillar of the bilateral relationship, it was brilliant to see India win the 2025 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup. Congratulations to the team on their historic win.
Best
