The Australia India Institute Wins the Australia-India Cyber and Critical Technology Partnership grant
The Australia India Institute has won a grant to fund a groundbreaking project on submarine cable connectivity, resilience, and supply chains.
The Australia-India Cyber and Critical Technology Partnership grant from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade will enable the Institute to collaborate with the International Institute of Information Technology Bangalore (IIIT-B), and CyberCX, Australia’s leading provider of professional cyber security.
The project, ‘Securing the Internet’s Backbone: Developing an Australia-India Framework for Strengthening Submarine Cable Connectivity, Resilience and Supply Chains’, will be led by the Institute’s Research Fellow, Samuel Bashfield, who said submarine cable networks should not be underestimated, carrying approximately 99% of Internet traffic globally.
“Submarine cable networks are integral to modern society as they are the backbone of digital information flows,” he said. “As these networks are constantly growing, expanding, and reconfiguring, there is an increased need for research and analysis on how best to protect and increase the resiliency of existing and future cable networks.”
The project was selected for funding in round four of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s Australia-India Cyber and Critical Technology Partnership (AICCTP). It will result in a variety of policy-focussed publications and a 1.5 Track Dialogue to be held in Perth, in 2025.
