Dr Pradeep Taneja is currently Deputy Associate Dean – International (India) and Senior Lecturer in Asian Politics in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Melbourne. He is also an Academic Fellow of the Australia India Institute and a Member of the Centre for Contemporary Chinese Studies. Born and raised in India, he has been in Australia since 1985.

His current research interests focus on the rise of India and China as significant powers; Australia-India relations; Sino-Indian and Sino-Australian relations; and Indian Ocean security.

He is currently working on a book on Sino-Indian rivalry in the Indian Ocean and the agency of small island states. His career spans teaching, consultancy and research. He has held visiting fellowships at the Hong Kong Baptist University, National University of Singapore and the Mercator Institute for China Studies in Berlin. His books and monographs include China Since 1978 (with Colin Mackerras and Graham Young); Hong Kong and Australia: towards 1997 and beyond; and The European Union and China: Interests and Dilemmas (edited with Georg Wiessala and John Wilson). He has also contributed to the Routledge Handbook of China-India Relations, Dictionary of Chinese Politics and the Encyclopedia of Modern China. He is regularly interviewed by Australian and foreign media.
